Short Video Script Writing: How to Write Engaging Copy
Last updated: May 2026
Scripts separate consistent creators from one-hit wonders. Writing before filming saves time, reduces rambling, and improves retention.
The Hook Formula
Your first line determines whether viewers stay:
- Promise hook: "Here is exactly how I [specific outcome]"
- Controversy hook: "Unpopular opinion: [contrarian statement]"
- Story hook: "The worst mistake I made was..."
- Question hook: "Why does everyone [incorrect assumption]?"
Script Structure Template
- Hook (1-3 seconds): Stop the scroll with specific promise or statement
- Context (3-10 seconds): Brief setup - why should viewer care?
- Content (10-40 seconds): Deliver the value you promised
- Payoff (5 seconds): Summarize key insight or reveal outcome
- CTA (2-3 seconds): Clear next action - save, follow, comment
Writing for Spoken Delivery
- Use short sentences - written and spoken rhythm differ
- Remove filler words from script: "basically," "actually," "kind of"
- Write conversationally, like explaining to a friend
- Read aloud to test flow before filming
Common Scripting Mistakes
- Weak hooks: "Hey guys, today I want to talk about..." - viewers scroll past
- Too much context: Jump straight into value
- Vague CTAs: "Like and subscribe" works less than "Save this for later"
- No structure: Rambling without clear points
